RE: Late summer/fall bloom
Here in zone 9 (sunset zone 16) it's the salvia greggii, the hebe shrubs and
the california fuschia that are lighting up my garden. Hummingbirds all over
the place at last - they were nowhere to be seen through mid-summer, despite
the salvia blooming on. The cool season perennials like carnations are in
full bloom already and though most of the mixed oriental lilies I tried a
few years ago have declined as I expected, there is one variety, pure white
with flocking on the inner petals, that is getting better every year and is
so strongly scented you can catch it from 10 feet away. I expect they'll be
gone by mid-September at the latest but they were glorious from mid-August
till now.
