Hi Chas
A lot of other people here would agree with you, but Tony and I prefer
the alternative reading that 2000 is the final year of the twentith
century.
And to answer your question - Our national day. It commemorates the
signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between the Maori and the British
Crown at Waitangi in the Bay of Islands in 1840, which is regarded as
the founding document of our country.
