Good new year wishes to you also Loretta and tribe!

Here south of the Line it is of course our _longest_ day and holds to
promise of long lazy summer days to follow.

Curiously, it is also a feast of lights for us, as quite a few people
(we have one down our street) go to vast trouble and ingenuity to
decorate their houses with Christmas lights. In Dunedin there is whole
short suburban street which puts on a combined display, but I don't
think we have anything so concentrated locally. Various local
authorities sometimes join in also, especially decorating specific
trees. Our local council for years did this with a huge landmark pine
tree, but the last year or two it has remained dark, apparently due to
efforts at cost- cutting.

It is quite common at this time of year for people to take a drive round
in the dusk to enjoy the illuminations.
