Glenn,
I have had good results with propagating Romneya from
root divisions taken in late winter/early spring. Use
the big fat roots, they seem to work best. Although
any little piece of root left in the ground will seem
to regrow, I never seem to get 100% take of the pieces
I purposely try to propagate. Glenn Keator in his
book Complete Garden Guide to the Native Perennials of
California, mentions that it is also propagated from
cuttings, and seed requires fire pretreatment. He
also mentions that it is bee pollinated, but has no
nectar, just pollen. A very light/free draining soil
mix seems to suit the plant in the ground best.
I have never had any set seed in my garden either, but
then northern California is well outside its native
range,(chaparral of Ventura County), and we have very
few bees around here, due to decimation of the
population by the bee mite.
Sounds like you are getting our rains, it has been dry
here for several weeks now. Today we woke up to very
heavy ground(Tule) fog, and it is rather mystical
outside with visibility limited to several 100 feet
only.
Best wishes to all for the new year!
