Most varieties of quince do just fine in central and northern California, so 
I'm not sure they need much "winter chill."  The wonderful, intensely 
fragrant variety "Pineapple" was introduced by Luther Burbank from his home 
in Santa Rosa, and a very productive specimen of that variety graced our 
garden when we lived there.
