Tim,
Could the second (prickly) seed pod be
Ricinus communis, the castor oil plant?
The first sounds like some kind of milkweed
(Asclepiadaceae) -- I'm guessing the vine, Araujia sericifera, or "cruel plant"
(because it catches moths by the proboscis).
