Winter Blooms

With the winter/holiday slowdown in postings to this
list, I'd thought I'd post what's blooming in my small
garden right now and maybe I'll inspire others to do
the same.

There's alyssum (Lobularia maritima) in bloom
throughout. I sowed it 4 years ago as part of a mix I
created that would do well on my sandy soil and it
seems to be the winner from that mix.

My last remaining Libertia grandiflora (a NZ native)
is beginning to bloom. I lost the other big specimen
this last year (2001) after it had bloomed non-stop
(literally) for about 18 months. Does anyone know if
this so-called perennial is actually a monocarp? The
one starting to bloom now was from the same seed batch
as the dead one but this will be its first bloom.

The Autumn Sages (Salvia gregii hybrid 'Maraschino')
are blooming (since September/October). Fabulous
color and the wintering hummingbirds are loving them.

Another Salia (S. chamaedryoides) is pumping out more
of its very nice bloom flowers. I've had it in an
Italian pot for about 4 years now and it's still happy
(except when I forget to water it).

One subshrubby Osteospermum is in bloom and all of my
Arcto-Venidium hybrids are either blooming or are in
bud.

The Crassula ovata is finishing and the Kalanchoe
tomestosa (Panda Plant) is about to explode into
bloom. I don't think I've even seen one in bloom.
Various other potted succulents are doing their subtle
thing.

My dwarf lavenders are showing new blooms among the
old -- I need to prune them again!

I have plenty of pots of Pelargonium peltatum (Ivy
Geranium) in bloom and they make me feel as if I'm on
the Mediterranan Sea (or is it South Africa?).

The giant Euryops (Gamolepsis; here from the last
owners landscape) are covered in those bright yellow
flowers that seem so common during most of the year
but actually are welcome on this drabby rainy day.

My potted Veltheimia (which I've planned to put into
the ground the last so many days) is in swollen bud.

What all going on in your garden?

Joe Seals
