Re: Michauxia

Hello Karrie --

Thanks very much for your suggestions! I've emailed greenacres and
specialplants (who turns out to be in the UK) in the hopes of obtaining
starts rather than seeds. The nargs seems not to have the 2001-2002 seed
list out yet.

I realize your comment wasn't directed at me, but yes, I've found M.
tchihatchewii to be monocarpic -- blooming in the second or third summer,
if I recall correctly, and then dying after setting seed. This year at
least the seeds didn't mature before the rainy season started here in
western Oregon. We got buckets and buckets (which we sure need after last
year's drought, I keep telling myself, as I look out the window and try to
remember what sunshine is like...) and that seemed to rule out any chance
of getting viable seed off them. They're native to Israel and Turkey and
presumably other places in that area, and I think they are just oriented
toward a longer dry season. Has anybody else in a wetter climate had
success harvesting seed, or having them reseed themselves? (and do they
require camels to step on those heavy-duty seed pods?)
