It's been awfully quiet on this forum lately! I was
wondering if anyone else has been growing this new
introduction via Pacific Horticulture Plant
Introductions, and saved from extinction in the wilds
of Chiapas through the good fortune of collections
made back in 1971 by Dr. Dennis Breedlove of the
California Academy of Sciences.the plant is currently
being offered in California by San Marcos Growers in
Goleta, and can be viewed at www.smgrowers.com.
The plant is not from a mediterranean climate, but
does very well in milder parts of coastal California.
The main interest in this plant is the late fall into
spring bloom period, with large corymbs of dangling
2~3 inch tubular golden yellow to orange flowers with
reflexed tips, a red calyx and is quite showy. The
foliage is quietly understated, glossy and deep green,
on a 5 to 8 foot tall shrub, preferring dappled shade
conditions in hotter regions, and full sun in fog belt
regions.
My question is regarding blooming habit around the
state. My understanding is that there are approx. 8
different clones in existance, and the clone named
'Cristobal' for sale by San Marcos Growers. Their
notes seem to indicate late summer bloom for the Bay
Area, with spring and fall bloom in southern
California. Is this the habit people are seeing? The
clones I've seen at both UC Berkeley and Strybing
Botanic Gardens only seem to bloom here in late fall
to early winter. The plant I purchased in September
from SMG was already in bud, but did not open flowers
until December. Does anyone else have experience with
the plant to be able to say when it will bloom?
Also, I have different spellings for this, both Deppia
and Deppea, which is correct?
