If it's Pereskia aculeata, which it sounds like, I've seen this plant growing as a climbing shrub up a wall on the island of La Gomera (Canary Is.) and it's really attractive. Flowers are pinkish white, rather like a wild rose (e.g. Rosa canina). They are followed by smallish, colorful, edible berries. It's a scrambling plant, so best with a framework or trellis for support. It belongs to the cactus family (Cactaceae), but is unusual in non-succulent.
