Maria's description does not sound like T. fluminensis. which is a
moisture-loving, semiaquatic invasive weed, now naturalized in Florida and
California:

In my experience, T. fluminensis has no purple at all in its makeup. Any
chance you could find a place to post a photo of your plant? It sounds
attractive, and there ARE some desirable species in this large genus.
