- Importance: Normal
Wanted: San Francisco Bay Area Gardens in San Mateo or Santa Clara Counties
with California native plants prominently featured
For: The second annual Going Native Garden Tour on Sunday, April 18, 2004, from
10 to 4pm.
Goal: Meet other people interested in incorporating natives into their gardens
and share your enthusiasm for native plants and your work-in-progress with them.
The tour is an opportunity for visitors to choose from a wide range of gardens,
to see new (to them) plants at all stages of growth, to talk to knowledgeable
gardeners, and to go home with a different idea of what a front yard can look
like, or with enthusiasm for trying out some appealing plants they saw.
Scope: Here's what we said about the 2003 tour, which featured 27 home gardens
and 2 community gardens from Redwood City to San Jose: Most of the gardens on
the tour are small suburban yards. Some of them have mature shrubs or an
astounding collection of plants; others are simple and feature the most common
and easily found natives. Many of them have replaced lawns with drought-tolerant
natives and Mediterranean plants; others have retained some lawn and use natives
as foundation plants. Many gardeners are transitioning to natives or mixing
native plants with edibles. Several mostly native gardens provide wildlife
habitat and attract birds and butterflies with colorful native plants. A few
gardens feature swaths of native wildflowers and bulbs, some with native grasses
complementing the flowers.
Deadline: To submit your garden for consideration, contact Tanya Kucak at
tanyak@igc.org before January 15, 2004.
Criteria: Healthy garden with at least half natives, or natives prominently
featured. Enthusiastic gardener. Located in San Mateo or Santa Clara County.
The tour is free, but visitors must preregister. For more information, e-mail
