The Santa Clara County Rose Society's website has a
terrific list of roses that do well in medit climates such as San
Jose's.
I spoke some time ago with a rose gal who used to
live on the coast about fog and roses. Her advice on the healthiest roses
for coastal gardens was the pick the ones that tended toward lavender and
'blue' (not a true rose color). Fewer diseases on
them.
The San Jose Heritage Rose Garden at Spring and
Taylor Streets has over 3500 varieties of roses from species to
hybrids, florabundas to standards, chinas, teas, once bloomers, Cherokee
rose, etc. The once bloomer section has gorgeous hips. If you
are ever in town, it is an amazing place. Info at http://www.heritageroses.us
Cheers,
Bracey
