It certainly be difficult sometimes when taking a piece of wood from the middle of a pretty cylindrical stem!

An easy way to be sure after you have prepared the cutting is to cut the top end in a slant, as you would in pruning it, but trim the bottom straight across just below a node. If you do this consistantly you won't ever be puzzled as to which end is which when you come to put it in the soil.
