This may be an oversimplification - but I think the name is
simply a variation on the Latin prickle/ for a prickly plant
(aculeus = spine). And this rose certainly is. Recently
I spent some time researching the differences between the terms prickle and
thorn in various languages because most rose books get them wrong. I
discovered that the error is the same in Dutch and French (from rose friends in
those countries). A wild guess. Bill Grant
