We had five nights between 28F and 32F with little damage. Lost our basils and peppers but that was expected. A yellow variegated Lantana was crispy even when covered but will return. Richardâs salvia collection survived very well. S. macrophylla took a good hit but will return. All the others did well, including some newly planted ones. No damage to larger shrubs at all. Citrus (lemon, lime, blood orange, mandarin, kumquat) are fine. Agave attenuata is under row cover for the winter and doing OK with lots of pups if necessary. We live on a hill where the cold just slides through on its way downhill so it doesnât sit for long. Perhaps that makes the difference. Now that I say all this, I expect our next frost will hit things harder but letâs hope not! Cheers, Bracey San Jose CA From: seanaohara@gmail.com [mailto:seanaohara@gmail.com] On Behalf Of Sean A. O'Hara Hey folks - Seems like there is a good opportunity to discuss the effects of the recent cold weather on your gardens. I'm so glad to no longer feel the urgent need to cover certain items. A few larger (and therefore harder to protect) shrubs were hit pretty hard and are now starting to show the effects. I suspect I probably have not lost them and that they will come back. On the other hand, some plants I thought might die back to their roots are doing quite well. Interesting to contrast our expectations with reality at times. SeÃn O. |
