[medit-plants] Re: Silk Tassel Tree

Barry -

The handsome foliage of Garrya elliptica is suggestive of oaks.  This shrub is among those plants that have attractive foliage year 'round.  Not only is it important to place this plant where you can easily appreciate its handsome catkins in mid-winter, the lush, shiny leaves make it something to admire the rest of the year.

These plants can look like a small oak with unlobed leaves out of flower. We have one near an office here and I thought it was a young oak. Later on I saw its very long tassels (obviously the 'Jim Roof' cultivar). Glorious plants, and I need to see if I can find one again.

Sean,

I planted a Garrya late last winter and was trying to determine when it would flower. I came across the following photo https://flic.kr/p/5YJErd and then realized it was taken by you! Now I know when to expect it to come into flower! Fingers crossed.

Thanks for putting that photo on flickr and for creating this group!

Steve
