Cranberries

 Hi everybody,

Regarding cranberries, Swedes to the rescue!

Latin name; Vacci=B4nium Oxyco=B4ccos is a member of the Erica=B4ceae, the
heathers. Its more famous relatives are lingonberries and blueberries. It
is a creeping shrub ( almost vinelike ), with light red flowers, the fruit
is reddish/blue ( colour can vary between red and almost blueblack,
green/yellow in colour when unripe ) and round/oval in shape. The plant is
found growing on moss in boggy terrain and can also be found hidden in the
 moss.
The berries can be picked unripe, and left to ripen indoors, season starts
late Summer/early Autumn, and they can also be picked when the snow has
melted away in Spring...they acquire a special taste from the frost.

The taste is considered more "wild" than the lingonberry, hence the use in
Scandinavia (jam) with dishes like moose, reindeer and other wild game.
Sometimes a 50-50 mix ( add lingonberries ) is favoured when making jam,
which is mostly the way we eat it.
It is also a nice ingredient in liquers, drinks, icecreams, and soft drinks.

Here in Sweden it is not so commonly known, and the more famous relatives
are favoured....lingon berries and blue berries.

Mediterranean? Not very, I would say! Seasonal? All the year around....

 Ingrid.
