Hi folks,
I just purchased a one gallon specimen of Thagodia spinescens deltophylla
from Saratoga Horticulture Foundation (saratoga@garlic.com) at their
holiday open house and plant sale this past Saturday. They describe it as
follows:
"This Australian native was recently released from our research program.
It is a low, dense ground cover spreading to 2 ft tall and about 8 ft wide.
They grey foliage will add texture and contrast to any garden setting. Best
grown in full sun; tolerate wind, salt, and drought."
I bought it because it was ever so pretty. The leaves are quite tiny,
about 1/4 inch and shaped like minature ivy leaves. They grow in
alternately-placed clusters along long somewhat arching stems. The
foliage color is gray, but a gray with a lot of yellow and green
undertones, not the blues one usually associates with gray foliage plants.
The Helichrysum petiolare 'Variegata' that I used to grow a lot just got
too out of hand (I saw it recently in its "native" state -- a 20 foot mound
engulfing everything in its path) and I realized it would never do in among
my mixed beds. I'm hoping this plant will be a good replacement.
Have any of you in Australia grown it? And if so, what has been your
experience? BYW, Marlo Doherty, nursery manager at Saratoga Hort, says
this plant will also do o.k. with moderate to heavy water.
Keep a lookout for this plant -- I think it will be a great addition to any
Mediterranean collection.
Regards, Carol
