Yes, it seems to be. I have 3 of them outside, and they all came through
last winter unscathed - we had temperatures of -8C, which is as low as we
have recorded since we have been here (8 years). It is a totally deciduous
plant.
Other varieties growing outside either here or nearby include A. praecox and
A. campanulatus. I have no experience of others outside, but I have a few
more from seed which will be going out next spring. Also, I see that A.
dyeri grows outside OK at Kew according to Phillips & Rix..
