Namaqualand & Cape tour in fall 1997

 A interesting upcoming tour:

Namaqualand & the Cape Foral Kingdom
                                 with
                             Bob Ornduff
                    August 17 - September 3, 1997

In the southern hemisphere springtime, the inhospitable veld of
Namaqualand bursts into color. If the tuning and amount of winter
rainfall has been just right, a floral carpet may extend for miles.
This is part of the fabled Cape Floral Kingdom, occupying the
southwestern corner of South Africa. After a few days in
Namaqualand, the tour will thread a leisurely course through the
mountain passes and coastal plains, examining the 'fynbos' flora of
the region - the proteas, ericas, and amazing variety of bulbous
plants. A behind-the-scenes tour of Kirstenbosch National Botanical
Garden and a visit to Karoo Botanical Garden are highlights. The
Cape Winelands, with their gracious 18th century Cape Dutch
Architecture will be visited. Extension tours of Namibia, Botswana
and Victoria Falls are offered. Bob Ornduff has made four visits to
South Africa exploring the winter rainfall region of the Cape
Province. He has also botanized extensively in the winter rainfall
regions of Chile and Australia. His particular interests in the
Cape region are its bulbs and succulents.
