 A interesting upcoming tour:

                  Gardens and Landscapes of Portugal
                                 with
                              Tom Brown
                           May 10-23, 1997

The characteristic Portuguese garden with courtyards, arcades and
covered walks, has much in common with what is known of Roman villa
gardens from the time of the great Empire that dominated Europe
between the first century BC and fourth century AD. The westward
spread of the Moors in the eighth century left eastern influences in
houses and gardens. With the expansion of the Portuguese Empire
from the sixteenth century onward, plants were brought into the
country from newly colonized lands around the world and the mild
climate allows cultivation of many delicate exotics. Portuguese
gardens today have water as a key element in design, and there is a
prevailing tendency towards integration of palace and garden - one
the extention of the other. They have evolved as part of a
tradition of art and craftsmanship touched with humor and whimsy in
invention and decoration especially with tile work, in buildings and
gardens. Our tour, with Tom Brown, landscape architect and
historian well aquainted with the Iberian Pennisula, as guide and
lecturer, visits many historic palaces and public gardens typifying
 the horticulture of Portugal.
