Re: Vireyas

Doug McClure asked:
"Is anyone growing Vireyas, a rhododendron related vine or shrub? Do you
have any growing advice or recommended varieties?"

Doug, I have grown a number of species. They did grow well enough for me in
shade here in San Diego at about four miles from the coast. I must add,
however, that they need more care than Azaleas such as A. indica. They are
less demanding of non-salinity of water which, as you probably know, is the
difficulty in growing rhododendrons in these areas. However, they do need
plenty of water under the very dry conditions that occur in September or
October. I lost a few under the intense heat and strong winds. If you are
in an area that is less expose to the east or north east you may avoid the
dessication and be more succesful than I was. I might add that they are
really worth trying, have beautiful flowers, many fragrant and are may be
the the best choice for rhododendrons in summer-dry areas. They will not
take more than five degrees (F) of frost.
If all this has not scared you I can list number of species but it would be
just as well to check a wider resource than myself. There are now many
dozens on hybrids that I know nothing about.
