I saw some of these beautiful trees on the Canary Island of La Gomera in
February last year. They were in full flower: very attractive pale pink
bells in clusters. They are oceanic island laurel forest plants and don't
really experience any serious cold in this natural habitat (maybe down to
about 45F?), so I don't know how well they would do in a Mediterranean
climate, which might be too hot and dry in summer and too cold in winter.
It must be one of the most showy Arbutus species, though, with nice large
(6 inch) glossy, laurel-like leaves and reddish peeling bark.
Nick.
