Sarah made enquiries about why her sweet peas do not grow well. I think the
most likely reason was provided by herself. Sweet peas do not like dry
sandy loam, at least, not without deep and heavy enrichment.Growing them in
the same place for years only makes the problem worse. Dig deep (old
English horticulturists recommended double bastard trenching of four feet
or more) and add lots of organic material - it is not critical which
organic material as long as it is well broken down. You can add bone meal
and sulphate of potash if you really want to live well. Roots will go deep
to find this and as long as you get moisture down there you will have
gorgeous sweet peas. Good luck, but I warn you it is a lot of work. Don't
blame the Solanum - blame yourself, if anybody!
