Celia, thanks for the reply!
I did get one suggestion from Peter Klement: fuchsias in Vina del Mar
(thanks Peter!).
I had assumed not many "Medit-Planters" have had the opportunity to
visit southern Chile. It was a last recourse question on my part. I've
now looked through quite a few travel books and there's only a scant
mention of botanical and/or private gardens. I think there's a calling
here. A traveler's guide to gardens of the world (I've kept all of
Alessandra Vinciguerra's posts on gardens in Italy just in case I make
it back there some day). I wonder if my wife, who doesn't like to
travel, would allow me to pursue such a dream?
Anyway...I hadn't planned on exploring Chiloe, but I will be in Puerto
Montt which is not far away. I'll send Martin Gardner mail and, if
nothing less, I'm sure he'll have some suggestions.
Many thanks!
Dave
