Dave, I thought lots of Californians would be familiar with
Chile! It looks so close from Western Australia!
The Director of Kings Park & Botanic Gardens, Steve Hopper,
visited Chile early this year and reported back on the flora
which is, of course, very interesting. He said that in Santiago
there is a large park called the Cerro San Cristobal, but the
native vetation has been eliminated; nevertheless, what there
is there might be interesting from a Medit-plants point of view.
A hundred kilometres south-east of Valdivia, there is the Puyuhue
National Park which he found very interesting. It has species of
Proteaceae and Myrtaceae and four species of native bamboo, among
of course many others.
If you haven't gone yet I hope this may be of some use! Have a good
trip.
