Re: Speaking of a Nursery in Portugal....
Whatever you do, try and get to the city of Granada and walk round the
fantastic gardens set out by the Moors up to 800 years ago. In the midst of
an arid landscape (though it has been raining a lot recently there) is a
cool hilltop with flowing water everywhere, a magnificent engineering feat
but also as memorable a garden as I've visited, dominating the plains for
miles around. Hedges of myrtle dot fountains set in cool arabesque
courtyards, citruses provide nourishment when the citadel is under siege
(but that hasn't happened since 1492, I'm afraid!).
The only problem may be that it's a couple of hours by car from the Costa
del Sol, but worth at least a ten-hour drive!
Failing that, just head inland up a river from any point on the Costa del
Sol and you'll soon be enjoying the hillside Mediterranean maquis, with cork
oak and lentisk, phyllirea and strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo), cistus and
as wide a variety of animal and plant life as you can take on a first visit.
A couple of towns off the beaten track to head for : Casares (enjoy the
vultures!), Benhavis (an artist's paradise).
Let us know how it goes!
