My garden ( or something to that effect :) )

I was out in the garden today and just thought id share my struggling
plot of land i call a garden :).

it is not much ( definately) most of the nieghbors probably think im
growing weeds because i refuse to spray and with the business of school
( i live at home while going to college, free rent :) )i havent had
much time to get to the garden. I must say though that the rains did
germinate the grass seeds in the soild, so now the formerly dead patch
is alive and growing ( ill try to keep it that way). My FLowering plum
put in over a foot of growth this season. I bought it last year and its
a little taller than me ( it was about five feet high, im about 6' 2")
It started to get little suckers from below the graft! I was surprised
but i did cut them off. My dietes bloomed like crazy this summer and
have a few flowers off and on. THe fountain grass reached a glorious
four feet high. It was the talk of the neighborhood. i planted a few
Miscanthus sinensis "zebrinus" near the sidewalk to hopefull keep
people out of that area. After the faucet handle came off i had to stop
watering the plants ( most get by without regular waterings) and the
chammomile i had started to die off. When the rains came it sprung back
so now i have this lovely green carpet by the porch. It basically was a
test to see if it could make it and how long without water. THe bamboo
is doing very well, and it getting its annual bright yellow leaves here
and there. I took a rhizome inside to see how well it will do. So far
its doing well. My little Yakujima Miscanthuses are doing well. they
have pretty seed heads that look nice indoors. I also installed a
manmade spring. All it is is just a bucket, a submersible pump, some
screening, and a bag of mexican beach pebbles. It looks real nice. For
some reason the water level keeps going down. I assume its a dog thats
drinking the water ( we get strays everynight). If anyones interested i
can tell you how to buld it. I also planted a few drought tolerant
ferns ( as far as ferns are concerned), theyre a species of
Microlepsis.It all looks very natural.
The backyard is getting on the way. We basically neglected it ( its
about 100ft by 70 ft. Nice and big). So its all Pennesetum clandestinum
( the feared and much maligned Kikuyu grass) and Ice plant. Im working
in getting both out but the only place i can put the chunks of sod i
dig up are into the percolator pond ( the city doesnt like that :) ) so
we may have to hire someone with a small bulldozer to come in and
level it off. I have three palms back there. One is an experimental
Ravenea Rivularis which im trying to see if it can survive the winters
here ( light frost) outside. I also have a Washingtonia robusta, and a
Syagrus Romanzoffiana. I plan to put more washingtonias and Syagruses
in ( i love those two!). Hopefully a small pond near the palms. I
already have Wisterias set up to cover the chain link fence ( its
growing on a trellis in front of the fence since im sure the city would
not like a big vine intetwined with the fence, and the vine would get
choked) I also cleared the little cement patio in a corner by the
garage door and a wisteria is going to grow up a trellis there . Im
training it into a tree type so it can stand on its own without me
having to maintain a wooden arbor for it.
I also want to grow a few orange trees that will fruit in the coastal
conditions here. Ive heard theres a blood orange that will grow on the
coast here. I also want one of those dwarf fig trees, and maybe an
apple or a cherry tree, and possibly a lemon tree.
So far thats my little corner of land. Its a work in progress (
constantly under construction like most web pages
