Some Pines can be rooted from cuttings. In 1966 at Cal Poly in Pomona
California, for a plant propagation class project I was successful in
rooting the juvenile shoots that appear at the base of Pinus canariensis.
These blue-green shoots rooted easily with bottom heat and intermittant
mist plus the help of some Hormodin type of powder. The Prof of the class
REJECTED the project because "It can't be done". He wouldn't even look at
the results - rooted cuttings. The plants grew well and were planted in
the San Dimas Experimental Forest. The system can be used to produce
cuttings from exceptional clones of this ornamental pine.
