Taking up Bob's thread on amenity plantings, I think hedge bindweed,
Bermuda grass and Oxalis p.-c. are a great start. I can't help wondering,
if all those majestic old pines are going to die off in Monterey Co., how
about getting the U.S. Forestry Service (or whoever) to re-plant with
nice, sturdy, fast-growing, disease-resistent Eucalyptus, underplanted
with Bob's mix, plus maybe some Arundo donax along the creeks? Of course,
the live oaks would have to be grubbed out. I don't know how well
Agapanthus would grow in Monterey, but believe me, it looks a real treat
on the Atlantic island of Madeira, forming a dense ground cover under the
eucalypt forest. Much more attractive than those boring old endemic
laurels that used to be there....
