Re: Redwoods

Hi Zeki.

You may get better results than you expect with your redwood if you can
give it supplemental irrigation in the summer, and provide a good deep
mulch for it.

We have good luck with redwoods here, about 100 miles inland over a
mountain range from their natural range. Not only do we get no morning
fog, but day temperatures in summer are commonly up to 40 C. We also get
what we call the North Wind, often in late spring and early fall (but
other times also) when temperatures may be 32 C, wind speed may commonly
be 45 Kilometers and humidities are around 2%. Despite this dessicating
wind, as long as the trees are given about 5 cm of irrigation each week,
they do fine, and become quite tall without ever losing their leader
shoots. True, they do not approach the coastal forms, but they are one
of the tallest trees we can grow here.

Unless your conditions are much more severe, I think you will have some
rather large trees in a very few years. But appropriate irrigation may
be the key. Good luck.
