Hi All, Yes Imported Fire Ant has been discovered in California in past years. The difference is that this infestation is very large.
In the early 90s a nursery site in the Carpinteria Valley (just south
of Santa Barbara) was found to be infested with the same critter. Treatments
to nest mounds were successful but several years later retreatments were
done at the same site.
The Carpinteria infestation probably came in the soil of a shipment
of large foliage plants from Florida or Texas. The Federal inspectors
were ruthless in examining surrounding properties as well as any property
used by the nurseryman who had the infestation.
The employees of the Carpinteria nursery knew that the ant was a different
and nasty critter, but the owner must not have known what a pest he had.
The Orange county infestation is in a large nursery site, in local parks
as well as tract home yards.
This infestation may have been in this area for several years as property
owners describe "large" mounds.

The first major infestation in California of fire ants is in Orange County. Has there been any reports anywhere else in this state? They thrive in Med climate. What can we do about them? Is it too late?bill grant
