I was interested in your wildflower meadow experience, as we (about 1/2
hour away from you on a hillside acre on the West side of Morgan Hill,
CA) had originally planned something similar. We ended up planting
shrubs, trees, and perennials (on drip), with a bark mulch, and are now
going through our first winter with hand-pulling and selective spray
(Roundup) of weeds. We are avoiding spray on the California poppies,
lupine, brodea, yarrow, and the fine needle-like grasses. We are also
leaving the oak seedlings.
There may be other natives worth leaving, but we don't at this time know
what they are. In the spring we may scatter some wildflower seeds, as we
haven't given up on the original idea. One additional factor in our
landscaping is letting our two Golden Retrievers have free run, which
means using reasonably sturdy plants and working on getting rid of
foxtail grasses.
Anything more you can add on selective weed control would be of interest.
Also, it would be fun to see your wildflower meadow when it is in bloom.
