Constructed versions of California vernal pools can be seen at the
Strybing Arboretum in San Francisco and at Rancho Santa Ana Arboretum in
Claremont. Both seem usually to be dominated by meadow-foam [Limnanthes
douglasii], though there are many other species in natural pools.
At least some of these annuals would do well in a constructed mud puddle
in heavy clay soils.
