Brrrr...

Happy Solstice to all.

We had ice in the roof garden pond this am, and some persistant icy patches on
paths that get almost no winter sun. Freezing, nasty, dehydrating wind up
there...
I watered those things most susceptible to damage thouroughly ahead of time,
having been through the bad freeze in Feb. '90 in this garden. That year we
had pipes and valves burst and since at that time the valves were the old
hydraulic normally open ones we also had icesicles everywhere! Really it was
beautiful. And it gave me a reason to put in a modern system! In that freeze
we lost permanently only one Meyer Lemon tree, although the tops of several
things froze.
Most came back from the roots (Hydrangeas, Arctotheca) or from seed (Echium
fastuosum and Cuphea ignea). I try to avoid planting things that are tender at
25F,
but I admit to a weak spot for some of the more tender Salvias...I'll let you
all know how they fared when this is over... and at home I've some tender
Fuchsias,
Bamboos and Brugsmansia in pots all of which I've brought under the shelter of
my Douglass Fir so they should be ok...This sort of weather shakes us out of
our complacency in the Bay Area and so can ultimately be a very good thing I
think...

best to all,

Deborah
