Re: How cold it got

Here in Seattle we got down to around 15; over on the Kitsap Peninsula
they hit 10. It's 21 degrees outside now, the office is 61, and thank
the earth mother for hot tea. (Hey, Demeter, couldja turn up the
thermostat a bit?)

This is definitely not one of those years where Geranium maderense makes
it... (Last year was - our low was 25, and G. maderense did survive in
my garden, only to die out in April.) Last year, Salvia clevelandii, S.
patens, S. involucrata, and others made it through. They're toast now!
(Why do we use this expression to describe piles of dark green slime?)
I expect to see lots of black-leaved fatsias during the next few weeks.

The only thing I'm going to be really sorry about losing is some great
Verbascums from S. Turkey - V. chrysochaete and V. cheiranthifolium.
They grew amazingly last year but never bloomed and I was hoping for it
this year. They are from the mountains so there might still be a
chance. Gotta test it somehow I guess.

Well, there's always Spring!

Bob
