I live pretty much in the middle of the Berkeley (California) flatlands,
with an open lot adjoining my house -- so I have in a relatively exposed
position compared to my neighbors with closely-packed houses and lots of
trees.
Here, it went down to 26 (F) Sunday night, and to 31 (F) Monday night. (By
comparison, I had 2 nights at 21 (F) and one at 20 (F) during the 1990
freeze.)
In anticipation, I was able to cover, bring inside, or spray "Cloud Cover"
on most of my fragile things. But the unprotected banana, babacao, and
assorted less-important things now look like sauteed lettuce. Many of the
Cherimoya's outer leaves appear freeze-dried, but those on the interior of
the leaf canopy may be OK.
Why do i still insist on growing such fragile things? Because it can be
10-15 years between killing freezes, and that leaves a lot of time to enjoy
a plant before it is lost.
