I'd like to propose that list members from northern
California report what the freeze has done to their gardens.
It'd be useful to pool our findings. Here's my
contribution so far...
--Foliage of South African Oxalis plants in pots (nice
species, not the weedy kinds) wilted and looks badly
damaged. They are apparently extremely tender. Not sure
what happened to their roots.
--A 10-foot Chorisia insignis tree was defoliated and looks
grim. I suspect this species is more tender than Chorisia
speciosa, the pink-flowered Floss-Silk Tree (C. insignis has
white flowers).
--Same thing for my coral tree (Erythrina species) and a
Jacaranda.
--There was the expected bougainvillea damage.
On the other hand, my citrus (which are on a hillside with
air drainage) are making a valiant fight. Some visible
damage at growth tips, but less than I expected. And an
Australian flame tree (Brachychiton acerifolius) planted
near the Chorisia seems to be doing OK. That one's a relief
-- it's a very hard tree to find.
Air temperatures were above freezing in the 30s Monday and
Tuesday, but in a shady spot north of my house the surface
of the ground was still frozen in late afternoon. Not a
good sign. Air temperatures were in the mid-20s F at
midnight Monday evening.
