Bananas and Gingers

For give me for this slightly off topic posting but I have a bit of news
to share.

A few months ago we were talking about bananas, and I decided to buy one
from Stokes Tropicals (Rajapuri variety). Well, i got the mail on friday,
and a notice came in that the post office has it. Unfortunately I got the
mail after the pickup area in the post office closed. Sooooo, I find I
cannot get the plant until Monday! Hopefully, it will be OK for two more
days in their storage room ( i do hope it is OK).

Anyway, it's going into a large pot until spring because I dont want to
risk it outside in the ground this winter (come spring, it's going into
the ground). I can leave it outside during the day and bring it in at
night.

And also, i've been trying to grow a rhizome from a piece of ginger root
we had. I've checked it and it looks like it is doing fine (I see roots
starting to form and the growing tip is starting to lengthen). Is there
any special requirements for it to survive in this area if I wanted to
grow it outside? (I live near Monterey, California, BTW)

Thanks for any help.
