I'm from San Luis Obispo, halfway between San Francisco and
Los Angeles. We are about ten miles from the ocean. And like most of
Californias mediterranean coast we really have very little in the way
of what a midwesterner would call a river. They are usually called
creeks and most of thenm go somewhat directly from the coastal range
and foothills into the ocean. There is the Salnas River but parts of
this are underground and it never looks like a respectable inland
"river". We have a number of creeks here in San Luis Obispo but few
of them have even a foot of water most of the time, and are often
quite dry.. Then we get our rain from December to March, occasionally
giving us a flood.!!
We have a number of Corps of Engineer lakes called more
appropriately, reservoirs. I heard somewhere that our little Laguna
Lake is the only natural lake between SF and LA.
Our winds are usually onshore which means from the west. But
occasionally it does come other directions, usually east or southeast.
This behavior is probably rather general for several hundred
miles north and south.
Does this help? Do you have any other specific questions? ---Chas---
