Re(2): Medit Garden Ideas
Well, my picks would be:
- Quercus agrifolia and Arbutus menziesii for trees (not a usual
combination but i have actually seen an A. menziesii out in the chapparal
with Q. agrifolias. The large leaves and red peeling bark of the arbutus
would contrast nicely with the spiny, small leaves and smooth gray bark of
the Oak (IMHO).
- The two types of bush lupines here (i forget the latin for the silver
leaved one but they are common near the shore, the leaves are small and
densely clothes the branches). The silvery leaved one has blue purple pale
flowers, and silvery leaves, and the common bush lupine (L. arboreus) has
green leaves and yellow flowers (usually, i have seen bluish purple
flowers on some out in the wild lands of Ft. Ord).
- Of course I always love a combination of California Poppy, and Sky
lupines (L. nanus).
- Some of the local Manzanitas combined with the ceanothuses. Not really
contrastive, but i always like the look of those two types of plants
together. There is a species of Manzanita called "Sandmat Manzanita" that
hugs the ground closely (in fact, just a few steps from the edge of my
town, you can find a few large mats of this Manzanita growing).
