I also live in a residential area that doesn't allow farm animals of any
kind. When my girls were little, however, they persuaded me to buy some baby
chicks from the feed store one afternoon, with promises that they would take
care of them and I wouldn't have to do a thing. Wry grin. I built them (the
chickens) a nice coop with laying boxes and a large run, and we enjoyed fresh
eggs for many years. We had no problems until one of the hens died, and we
went back to the feed store for a replacement. They had no "Sex-linked
Reds," so we ended up buying a couple of "straight run" Barred Rocks. Six
months later, one of our new "hens" started crowing at all hours! The
greater surprise, though, were the many cock-a-doodle-doos he would get in
response from all points of the compass. Apparently we weren't the only
"boot-leg" chicken farmers in the neighborhood.
