I seem to recall a discussion about Carpenteria californica earlier (this
year?) in which it was noted that they are slow to take hold and flower. It
takes 2-3 years to settle in? I purchased mine in the Sierra foothills near
their native habitat and it has been in the ground for 2 years here in Menlo
Park. It is growing slowly, looks somewhat lush in winter and shabby in
summer, so best planted toward the back or in a border with other scrubs that
can shine in summer. There is a lovely blooming specimen in the border along
the parking area at Gamble Garden in Palo Alto, California, so I know it can
be grown easily in the San Francisco peninsula.
