Kurt,
Wow! Am I glad to know that. An evergreen oak sprang up in my sunny garden
about 20 years ago after being planted probably by a squirrel. As you can
imagine, that part of the yard is now quite shady. The oak gets regular
summer water near the drip line, and it is thriving. One plant that does
especially well near the trunk, and away from the water, is Anemone japonica.
It lightens up the shade with a profusion of white flowers from late summer
through autumn. Ribes vibernum looks beautiful under the oak with pretty
pink flowers in the spring. Erigeron karvinskianus does well, too, but does
not flower as well as the ones in full sun.
