Re: planting under Calif. live oak


Not on your list, but I would suggest Oxalis oregana, the California native;  it
grows well in shade, seems to get by without water (although it appreciates the
occasional light sprinkle, normally getting drip from condensation).  It is
evergreen here, and seems to flower throughout the year; spreading but not
invasive.  It needs several inches of very fine mulch/litter to grow in.  It ocurs
naturally in redwood forests.  INterestingly, I have had a hell of a time getting it
established underneath a friends redwood tree, where there is massive amounts of
redwood litter, but no troulbe growing it under deep shade of a number of shrubs,
where there is regular compost.  I would recommend mixing a few inches of redwood
compost/sawdust (it is sold as  compost) into the top layer of litter under your
tree where you plant this, if you do.
