I have no experience with California Oaks but had you thought of 
the winter growing species cyclamen - hederifolium and coum in 
particular? There are dozens of selected forms and cultivars if you 
like variety or you could simply go with the commonest sorts and 
be just as happy. So long as the winter rains can penetrate the 
evergreen canopy things should go well. Try C. repandum too.
