Only incidentally relevant to the pruning discussion but it might be
worth mentioning for those who don't know the book that Peter
Smithers' ADVENTURES OF A GARDENER (Harvill/RHS, 1995) contains an
interesting chapter on wiste(a)rias (including a passionate plea for
the a to take precedence over the e, a discussion of pruning, and some
details and stunning photographs - by PS himself - of various Japanese
cultivars). It's a book worth having anyway - knowledgeable,
thoughtful (the two terms not always synonymous...), deeply felt and
beautifully written (in a very stylized, self-mocking 'superior
English gent' way)... and handsomely designed to display PS's
mouth-watering photography. It seems now to be remaindered, I think.
At least, I assume so, since copies were recently on sale for £12.50
whereas the original price was £30.
