Wisteria pruning

Three years ago, I planted a young wisteria vine at the base of a mature
Ponderosa pine. It has yet to flower — hopefully it will this spring.
Thin vines encircle the tree to about 20 feet, but none look to be
harming the tree. My plan is to keep the vine within reach of a ladder,
to control its upward growth. I don't want it to get too high up in the
tree and cause problems that I can't remedy. Anyone have an idea how
long it will be before I need worry about the vines constricting and
damaging the pine at lower levels? Am I going to regret using a live
tree for a support?
