Re: volunteers needed at a SF Bay Area public garden

Bay Area Folks -

An update on the plea I sent out previously (see second included e-mail
below). With all of the rain, hail, and even snow! we're having at the
moment, it is hard to picture being out in our own gardens much less
someone else's, but she can really use the help. There are a variety of
display gardens already going at this public park (including a nice warm
greenhouse!), providing opportunities to indulge almost any horticultural
interest or taste.

Sorry folks, another local posting -

The No. California Branch of the Mediterranean Garden Society is working
with the Lakeside Park Garden Center to bring into being a display garden
representing the concepts and plant selection that we routinely discuss in
this forum. Because of this interaction, I am aware of an urgent need of
this public garden for volunteers. Due to the difficulties in Oakland
Parks & Recreation at the moment, some staff being out for a protracted
time due to various reasons, the actual gardeners available for the upkeep
of this garden currently reduced to only a couple of people. Right now,
during the rainy season, weeds are rampantly taking over the place, which
is discouraging after many recent improvements made in the past year or
two. The head Gardener, Tora Rocha, is working very hard to make something
of this place, and she is indeed having an impact. But a lot of this
progress might be undone in the next few months.

If anyone in the East Bay, or even elsewhere, would like to help get this
garden back on its feet, I encourage you to consider putting in some time,
even temporarily. There are perks to be had - the garden now contains more
interesting plant material than previously, and development of some areas
is taking place (you can get involved or be on hand to learn a few
things). Volunteers have the opportunity to obtain propagated or overflow
material. The Mediterranean Garden Society's display garden will be
started soon, so there will be good opportunities to get involved there as
well.

If you or someone you know would like to volunteer, I encourage you to
contact Tora directly via her e-mail goffsh1@aol.com, or her pager (510)
997-2511. This is a worthwhile cause and we'd all appreciate your help.

Thanks for your indulgence . . .
Sean O.
